van Gogh #6:
Public Service
(2004, Music Library)

What does public service mean in relation to libraries and mediation of music?

On the basis of a re-definition of the concept public service and with Odense Music Library as the actual stage, van Gogh presents its vision for the music library of the future.

The project includes a re-thinking of the Music Library’s mediation as well as its physical and virtual facilities.

The further development and implementation of the Vision is expected to be completed during the period 2005-2006.

van Gogh about the oeuvre:
“In van Gogh’s conception of public service society’s cultural institutions should provide a possible take-off for the transcendence of one's own (self-)understanding: the realisation that the world is, and can be, something that moves beyond one's own experience. There are indeed other contexts, other perceptions, other sorrows, joys and experiences that can enhance one's life and grant it perspective. [..] In the van Gogh staging of the meeting with music we use four intonations. They are Sensualism, Bildung, Curiosity and Dialogue."

"Music Library as a work of art.
By invitation from Odense Music Library and with financial support from the Danish National Library Authority, the art group van Gogh has over the past year created a Vision for the music library of the future.
The Vision chooses as its starting point a re-defining of the concept of public service, and the proposed solution is developed specifically for Odense Music Library, which houses the largest music collection for public use in Scandinavia. The Library is centrally placed in Odense, the third largest city in Denmark, next to the exhibition space for modern art Kunsthallen Brandts Klædefabrik." Scandinavian Public Library Quarterly #38, 2005.

"[...] an altogether brilliant re-launching of Odense Music Library with i.a. concert hall and sound studio." Dansk Musiktidsskrift, January 2005.

“New life to Odense Music Library.
The art group van Gogh has created a fascinating vision for Odense Music Library which over the next two-three years will transform the library into a coherent compositional work with everything that could possibly be imagined in relation to symphonies between interior design, website, logo, lighting, signs and innovative mediation projects. The library has been re-created on the basis of four Sensualism, Bildung, Curiosity and Dialogue.
The result is a multitude of creative ideas such as ‘subjective librarians’ who apart from a music profile on the net must also have personal play lists, and who at the desk are accompanied by a real mynah bird who amongst other things has learned to say “jaaaazzz” in the voice of Dirch Passer, a well-known and much loved Danish actor.
The mynah bird is there to keep the "vibrant and and alert" thus the beautiful songbird fits in perfectly with the art group's idea of the institution having to have its own pulse in the form of sounds that are projected onto the square in front of the library as well as changing lights and elements that gradually appear on the website.
Moreover, the project suggests alternative placement principles based for example on "number of borrowed playing times distributed on periods", "works that most often trigger of reminders" and "unheard works that are never borrowed. "Exiting." MLA, Information, 26. January 2005.
